Emui: Handmade Guinomi Cup - Vertical Pattern White-Olive [Available upon request]

A handmade guinomi cup with vertical pattern by ceramic artist Emi Nakagawa. She studied ceramic production in Kyoto and uses the Kiyomizu-yaki tradition with clay from Shigaraki, Shiga.

About the White Slip Finish (Shirogesho 白化粧) of the Guinomi

This piece is created by layering a white slip and applying a thin transparent glaze before firing. As a result, fine crackles resembling kairagi (plum-blossom bark) may appear on the surface. This is a natural characteristic of pottery and we hope you will enjoy it as part of the piece’s unique texture.

In rare cases, the white slip around the crackles may peel slightly. Please avoid strong impact or friction during use and washing.

In addition, when used for long periods with dark-colored beverages or foods (e.g., strong tea, soy sauce, curry), some staining may occur. This too is a natural property of pottery and not a defect in quality.

We recommend washing gently by hand with a mild detergent as soon as possible after use. Please avoid dishwashers and microwaves.

As each piece is handmade, variations in color, pattern, and texture may occur, but we hope you will appreciate these differences as part of the individuality and charm of each work.

About the Artist

Emi Nakagawa hails from Miyoshi Village in Tokushima and has been creating ceramics by hand since 2020 after studying Kiyomizu-Yaki production in Kyoto. She teaches and creates crafts at a studio and school in Tokyo and is building her own studio in Tokushima. Primarily using electric powered kilns, she is still exploring her artistic styles with manipulation of clays, glazes, and firing techniques.

Her pottery brand, Emui (笑無為), reflects a philosophy of quiet joy and natural simplicity. Guided by the belief in making “pottery that subtly complements your heart,” Emi creates pieces that bring warmth and comfort — shaped by the rustic texture of clay, forms that rest naturally in the hand, and the quiet, peaceful time she spends in the natural landscapes of Tokushima.
